Hinterhermsdorf is a mountain village being surrounded by a 5 to 10 km wide forest belt. With 380 m above sea level, it lies relatively high in the “back” Saxonian Switzerland, which is now designated as national park. The town itself still lies in the open Lausitz mountains but in the forests the gorges and rocks of the sandstone formations begin.
Hinterhermsdorf, a nuclear village with forest hides, was founded in the 13th century. Until the 15th century, it belonged to Schluckenau and came to Saxony later. The there small stream Kirnitsch had been damed to raft wood to Dresden. Now, boat trips on the upper sluice are a tourist attraction. In 1652, with the Bohemian exiles, the canvas weavering came and the district Neudorf was founded. From the 80’s of the 19th century, the summer guests came out of the big cities. They were looking for and finding untouched, picturesque nature.
60 Upper Lusatian half-timbered houses give the town its unique character. On a small hill above the town the church of 1689 with its little tower sits enthroned. In 2001, Hinterhermsdorf got a gold medal in the competition about the Most Beautiful German Village. Hinterhermsdorf has approx. 600 inhabitants and since 1998 it is a district of Sebnitz.
