Jonsdorf lying in the Zittau mountains settles two neighbouring valleys, which are linked with each other by a flat ridge. From this ridge in southern direction, a geologically interesting rocky area, which became popular by its millstone bridge (1560-1915), develops.
Already in 1843, you were able to get cold water treatments in the current Jonashof, from 1890 a home to cure one’s lung disease and other nursing homes evolved. Summer residences, guesthouses and hotels served and serve the rashly developing tourism. In 1890, a connection to the local railway was necessary.
The baroque village church of 1731 is an unconventional, high construction made of sandstone cuboids. The hall-like, simple interior is surrounded by double galleries whose balustrade areas are designed with wood engravings of 1940 by the “Jonsdorf Passion”. The town itself has numerous, partly remarkable Upper Lusatian half-timbered houses. From 2001, Jonsdorf is an acknowledged spa.
By the numerous restaurants, an ice sports stadium which can be used throughout the year, a butterfly house; the favourable location in the mountains with forests, ingenious rock formations, marked-out paths und by the closeness to northern Bohemia, the town has a high living and recreation value. A border crossing for pedestrians leads across the border to the Czech Republic. Jonsdorf has approx. 2,000 inhabitants.
